It is the paradox at the heart of the Dutch Republic: how could a state emerge from resistance to political slavery and subjugation by a foreign power, only to become a colonial empire that promoted slavery all over the world? Slavery and the Dutch State shows how the modern Dutch state and its predecessors were complicit in colonial slavery. It describes the roles of various actors, such as enslaved people, administrators and merchants in the Netherlands and the colonized societies. More than thirty authors discuss the afterlives of slavery, the systematic nature of slavery in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the worldwide scope of slavery, and the various individuals, groups and organizations that had interests in slavery and colonialism starting in the sixteenth century. With chapters covering topics such as the Dutch Reformed Church's role in slavery, how the history of slavery is taught in schools, and the involvement of the Dutch parliament and royal family in colonial slavery, 'Slavery & the Dutch State' is one of the main publications to appear between July 1, 2023 and July 1, 2024, the year when the Netherlands collectively commemorated the legacy of slavery..

A set of lecture notes on quantum mechanics. It includes a review of classical mechanics and some of the necessary mathematics. It covers the harmonic oscillator, the hydrogen atom, angular momentum as well as topics such as symmetry with a discussion on periodic potentials, the relativistic electron, spin and scattering theory. Gives a description of one of the most beautiful and complicated examples in low-dimensional topology. This text describes the essential topological ideas through metaphors that are experienced in everyday life: shadows, the human form, the intersections between walls, and the creases in a shirt or a pair of trousers. Meer
Describes properties, production, modification and applications of nanostructured titanium dioxide focusing in particular on photocatalytic activity. This title highlights the physicochemical properties of nanostructured titanium dioxide and emphasizes on the links between properties and applications. Meer
Provides an introduction to the most important aspects in the physics of non-equilibrium systems. This title introduces stochastic processes and some modern tools and concepts that have proved their usefulness to deal with non-equilibrium systems from a probabilistic angle. Meer
Narrating the well-lived life of the Chinese Madame Curie - a recipient of the first Wolf Prize in Physics (1978), the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from Princeton University, this book provides an account of the life of Dr Chien-Shiung Wu, an outstanding and leading experimental physicist of the 20th century. Meer
Presents a readable description of one of the most mysterious concepts of physics: Entropy. This title guides the reader in understanding the concepts of entropy. Meer
Suitable for graduate or senior undergraduate students in accelerator physics and science, this title covers historical accelerator development, transverse betatron motion, synchrotron motion, an introduction to linear accelerators, and synchrotron radiation phenomena in low emittance electron storage rings. Meer
Provides an introduction to knot and link invariants as generalized amplitudes for a quasi-physical process. This title covers frictional properties of knots, relations with combinatorics, and knots in dynamical systems. Meer

Represents the proceedings of the interdisciplinary stream of the international workshop (Part 1) Times of Entanglement, 21 - 22 September 2010 at the Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai, People's Republic of China. Meer
A small army of physicists, chemists, mathematicians, and engineers has joined forces to attack a classic problem, the reversibility paradox, with modern tools. Meer
Gathers articles that were exposed during the seventh edition of the Workshop "Data Analysis in Astronomy". This book illustrates a trend to search for common expressions or models transcending usual disciplines, possibly associated with some lack in the Mathematics required to model complex systems. Meer
Consists of a series of peer-reviewed papers in stochastic processes, analysis, filtering and control, with particular emphasis on mathematical finance, actuarial science and engineering. Meer
Provides a classical physics-based explanation of quantum physics, including a description of photon creation and annihilation, and successful working models of both photons and electrons. Meer
In 1971, Leon O Chua presented the formulation of a memristor, which was postulated as the fourth circuit element in electrical circuit theory - one that could join the existing core group of elements: capacitor, resistor and inductor. Meer
Renowned physicist and mathematician Freeman Dyson is famous for his work in quantum mechanics, nuclear weapons policy and bold visions for the future of humanity. Meer
Consists of research papers and expository survey articles presented by the invited speakers of the conference on "Harmony of Grobner Bases and the Modern Industrial Society". Meer
A collection of articles that covers topics that range from Markov processes, backward stochastic differential equations, stochastic partial differential equations, stochastic control, potential theory, functional inequalities, optimal stopping, portfolio selection, to risk measure and risk theory. Contains the proceedings of the 14th International Symposium on Capture Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy and Related Topics held at the University of Guelph from August 28 through September 2, 2011. Meer
Provides a selection of papers of the late Daniel Amit (1938-2007). This title also provides a biography; an introduction on Daniel Amit's scientific career before the Hopfield model; and, introductions to each of the included papers, written by their co-authors.
